Yvonne’s Brighter Future

For ten years, Yvonne had lived in the same local home after fleeing her violent husband with teenage children. As her children became adults and moved out, Yvonne struggled to pay rent on her own and surmount increasing debt. Unable to make ends meet, Yvonne was living with a friend before calling our shelter for help.

Yvonne arrived at HKWS severely underweight thanks to the unrelenting stress and anxiety of her situation and pending homelessness. She had placed a low priority on her physical health and it had deteriorated over time. Caseworkers noticed Yvonne was also frightened, anxious and had severely low self esteem.

Together, Yvonne and her caseworker mapped out a case management plan to transform her life including: gaining weight, dental care, medical care, eye care, re-housing of her dog, resume, employment, psychological counselling, improved relations with daughters, financial management, driving lessons and accommodation. Quite a challenging to do list. In just over 3 months at our shelter, the only case plan goal not achieved was driving lessons!

Yvonne gained over 6 kg and had comprehensive professional dental, physical and eye care. Her beautiful dog was housed with the RSPCA Safe Beds for Pets program for the duration of her stay and she was able to visit regularly. Yvonne participated in the external Change Your Future program, completed a resume and secured part time cleaning employment.

Yvonne participated in psychological therapy and began turning around her difficult relationship with her daughters with regular dinners. A financial counsellor helped organize repayment plans for her debts that had accumulated over many years and Yvonne began budgeting for the first time. Driving lessons were delayed until her finances improved however she secured good share accommodation.

When the time came to leave the shelter, Yvonne was worried. She had never in her life lived independently before, always with her husband or children. Yvonne’s concern gave way to a new sense of self and a frightened, anxious woman only three months before transformed into a newly confident Yvonne – ready to begin her new, bright future. Yvonne worked so hard to improve every aspect of her life and left our shelter ready to live a positive, independent life.
