KATE’S NEW START

The death of her two sons led to the breakdown of Kate’s family. Her husband began abusing her and she turned to alcohol to mask the pain.  On the verge of a breakdown, HKWS was there, to help Kate recover and turn her life around.

Kate, 58 years, was overcome by grief over the death of her two beautiful sons from a rare blood disorder. Her husband coped by exerting physical and mental violence against her.

Having a drink, then another and another helped ease the physical and mental pain. Kate’s life spiralled downwards.

Arriving at HKWS, our case managers set about preparing a case plan to help Kate recover and turn her life around. In the process, our caseworkers discovered one of Kate’s long held dreams – to complete a law degree that she’d started many years ago.

During her three-month stay, Kate worked tirelessly with her caseworkers. Kate had already successfully completed a detox program that had given her clarity and conviction to change her life.

HKWS’ caseworkers helped Kate to successfully apply for a grant for financial assistance from Victims Services, to secure her health, safety and well-being.

They also worked with the local university to enable Kate to complete her studies with a full scholarship.

Kate is now a full-time law student with university accommodation for the full four-year duration of her degree. With an ongoing case plan, Kate has all the tools she needs to begin a new life.

Kate is not her real name
